Bill Jewell traveled to Paris in 1988 to paint a watercolor of La tour Eiffel in recognition of the upcoming 100th anniversary the following year, 1989. The original watercolor was painted on location, on a full sheet of Arches Watercolour Paper (22” x 30”). Upon completion, Bill went to Mourlot Imprimeur to publish an edition of 275 twelve-color lithographs. The Mourlot Imprimeur was the same printshop engaged by Picasso for over four hundred lithographs, and served many other world-renown Artists; the Mourlot studios closed in Paris in 1999, however each Bill Jewell print features an original Mourlot Imprimeur stamp.
The intricate iron lattice structure of the Eiffel Tower poses a technical challenge for artists, making it an interesting subject for various artistic styles and mediums. This challenge attracted Bill, who wanted to test his unique skills.
The Eiffel Tower is more than just an architectural marvel; it embodies the spirit of Paris, romance, and French culture. When Bill painted it, he wanted to evoke a sense of nostalgia, adventure, and beauty associated with this structure.
The Eiffel Tower, built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair) to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution, is historically important. Artworks depicting the tower often capture this historical context, adding depth and meaning to the pieces.
